Charlie said that he hated Algernon because Charlie can't beat Algernon at the maze races. He tries for such a long time and he gets really frustrated. He doesn't want to race against Algernon anymore.
I think he says he hates Algernon because he wishes that he was as smart, but he just isn't so i think that basically Charlie is jealous of Algernon! -Heidi
I think that as the reading/writing part of Charlie's brain developes, the emotional side is also becoming more complex. When he constantly is losing to a mouse, instead of looking at it as if the mouse is wonderful, he is starting to get down on himself. With all of these new feelings he is getting that he has never got before, he's not sure how to deal with them. I think that he is taking out his frustration of losing, and the built up tension of all these new feelings, on Algernon.
I think Charlie is more sad than he is mad. Charlie feels this way because he is frustrated that he cant beat even a mouse. I believe that Charlie and Algernon will become really atatched to one another.
I think Charlie says he hates Algernon because he can’t beat him at the maze races. He is feeling defeated and he’s realizing that he’s dumber than a mouse and so he says he hates Algernon because the mouse is smarter than him.
Charlie says he hates Algernon because Algernon can do mazes when he can't and faster than he can. Algernon is a mouse. Charlie can't comprehend why a mouse should be able to do these things when he can't, why a mouse can beat him at such a simple thing as a maze.
I think it is because Algernon is much smarter than Charlie. Charlie just wants to be smart like Algernon and beat him in a race. Algernon keeps on beating Charlie on the maze tests and he does not like that. Algernon got smart off the operation and Charlie is still not smart.
